Schwarzach August 14.2015

We left Golling to start the climb over pass Lueg. It sounded sort of hard in the bikeline book and first we were going to take the train. After talking to the people at the bike shop and at the Hotel it seemed pretty easy. Mac agreed to go with it. It really was not very steep just long, but we soon reached the pass and had a great down hill through the narrow canyon with. There were stretches without bike trail, but since the Autobahn opened traffic was not bad on the Bundesstrasse.. Soon the magnificent
castle Hohenwerfen came into few and we cruised down through the villiges of Tenneck and Werfen and on to Bischofshofen,St. Johann and to Scwarzach im Pongau our goal for today 48km in all. The trail mainly followed the river Salzach, through meadows and little wooded areas with views of the mountains, a pleasant ride.
We found our Hotel Schoenberg a bit out of town and of course  up a steep hill, but  a short one for a change. The woman is very nice and the room only 35.00 per person including breakfast
Going to dinner now back on the bikes.  We had dinner in town at an Italian restaurant.  The food and wine was good and the dessert was great.
At the top of Lueg pass.  A long climb and at the top the road goes thru a tunnel under traffic.

At the top of another pass

Hohe Tauern mountains

Salzach river thru the gorge.

Flowers along the trail

How the devil meant to divert the Gastein Springs:
The blacksmith of Oberarl in Plankenau/Sankt Johann had promised his handicapped daughter to the devil, provided the devil was able to bring him the healing springs of Gastein. The pact had one further condition; that the devil’s work be finished before the first cock crow the following morning. The devil agreed and set to work in the dead of night. The blacksmith’s wife – known to be a cunning witch – learned of the pact and vowed to bring her husband’s greed to an end. Taking up the bird just before day-break she doused it in the cold waters of the well trough causing it to crow lustily for all to hear. The devil, on his way to deliver his handiwork, was flying over the gorge with the warm springs, when he heard the Oberarl cock crowing and knew he had come too late. Furious at his failure, he flung the springs deep into the gorge so that no man would be able to reach them ever again. Until this day is has not been possible to extract the healing spring water from the canyon and divert it for general use.
