when we were kids my grandfather and my dad had the metall and blacksmith shop on the property also. my gramdfather

It was only 1 km to the ruins With the promise to a drive up to the kloister where the franzican monks are brewing the best beer he did come on the walk with us. afterwards we drove up to the kloister and had  a mass and then another half.

Pig story.  The Swedes had the castle under siege for a long time and food was almost gone and they had run out of cannon balls.  So they said what the hell and shot their last pig as a cannon ball at the swedes.  When the Swedes saw this they said "they have so much food we can't wait them out" so the Swedes left and the castle was saved.

On Sun. the 16th we took a ride to the Trimburg castle ruins.  Johanna said there wouldn't be any walking, just to the castle.  But knowing her I took an Ibuprophen anyway to help my knees.  When we got there we took off in a different direction then towards the castle.  I asked what was going on and she said we were just going to walk up the hill to an overlook about a mile away.  I stopped a 1/2 mile in and sat down at a table and waited for her to go there and come back.  She's always doing this to me.  We walked back to the ruins and the place was packed.  On Sundays different clubs alternate serving beer, wine, bratwurst, and cakes and the profit goes to the renovation fund for the castle.  The Sundial bridge patio in Redding would kill to have this amount of business.   The castle was started in the mid 1100s and had various owners down thru history until the the mid 1800s when it fell into disrepair.  When Johanna was a young girl they would come here and it was just a pile of rocks.  The farmers had stolen many rocks for various uses.  The city of Hammelburg took up the cause in the 1970s and started renovating the castle.  A lot of the paving stones have peoples names on them for the donations they gave.

Deegenburg Klinic

House 1.   It was the first building in the klinic to be built.  It has 30 room, commons room, solarium and hydortherapy room.
House 2  This has living quarters, dining room, and Reception.  The kitchen is being rmodeled and enlarged.
House 3  This has the commons room, living quarters, rehab, pool, weight room, and doctors offices
House 4   This is just living quarters
House 6   Living quarters
House 5  Living quarters with the lower floor is an aerobics room

Ludmilla and the mounted pike from the Saale River.  These fish were caught by Johanna's grandfather and Dad and one was caught by Peter's son Stephen.  3 of the older fish have just been renovated.  One is close to 100 years old

Klinic commons room.  Beer, wine and pastries can be bought here.  And usually each night they have entertainment of some sort from bands to chamber music to slide shows etc.   I could only get half the room in one picture.

The place where we stay is on the grounds of the Deegenberg Klinic owned by our benefactor Peter Deeg.  This is not what we think a rehab clinic is in Redding.  The German health care system allows up to 6 weeks of  rehab which is paid for by the State.  There is 10 euro/day out of pocket charge.  Over the period of time the patient is here he is taught, depending on the problem, how to control diet, exercise right and improve their overall health and help recover from surgery.  There is everything from diabetics, heart attacks victums, alcoholics, most types of surgery recovery and orthopedic rehab.  We only have breakfast there but they do serve 3 meals a day.  For breakfast there is cereals, yogurt, fruit, fresh rolls, cheese, and wurst.  No bacon and eggs.  The site has at least 100 acres and there are lots of lawn with lounge chairs for when the sun is out and plenty of trails to wander around on.  There is direct bus service to the town center and patients are given a Kurkarte for admittance to the concerts at the Kurgarten given twice a day.  All in all if you have to be in rehab this is nice place to do it.

Bad Kissingen Park

The dampferle
The Dampferle.  There are 2 boats that run people up and down a 2 mile stretch of the Saale within the park.  One boat as been in use since 1924 and the other since 1964 and do round trip in 40 minutes.   In the winter they pull the boats out on a track and into a garage.   This run picked up about 40 people.  It usually runs in the nice sunny days and is a peaceful trip thru the park.

Folks taking in the cooling salt water air.  Branches are packed tightly together from ceiling to floor.  The water is pumped from deep underground spring by some pumps that were built in 1844 and are still being used.  The water is pumped up to the top and then filters down thru the branches and gives a "cooling by evaparation" effect.  The salt in the water makes it seem like you are on the coast and is considered to have some therapeutic properties.  The day I was here it was around 80 degrees but it seemed a lot cooler near the gradierbau.  I had seen other ones at other spa towns but none of this size.

The park stretches for at least 4 miles along the Saale.  Germany doesn't have high school sports as America does.  They have a club system.  A lot of the different sports have their venues in the park such as the tennis club, the soccer club and the riding club and I'm sure many more that I didnt see.  Each sport has a clubhouse where the parent can sit and have beer or wine while they watch their kids practice.  The city maintains a greenhouse at the upper end of the park.  I was here 20 years ago in April and one day the park by the Kurgarten looked grey and wintery and the next morning the whole place was planted with the flowers blooming.  Even at this late date, close to Nov.,  there are still flowers at the Rosegarten.

Lindau to Bad kissingen 10-11-11

We woke to pouring rain and decided to go back to bad Kissingen.  I, Mac have developed a slight case of gastritis(self Diagnosis), probably from taking NSAIDs everyday along with wine, federweisen, and Zwiebelkuchen.   The trip home had 4 changes of trains and only one change had a car without 2 or 3 steps into it.  Eventhough we were home by 1730 and the weather was a lot better in BK then in Lindau.  That was the end of our bike tripping so any more posts will be about the area surrounding BK.  In total we did about 1600 miles of trips, like riding from Canada to Mexico.  When we talk to locals about it they say we have seen more of Germany then they have.  As for which was the best trail I still think the Saale from Gemunden to Bad Koenighofen  with the Main 2nd, Mosel 3rd.  The Danube was great in sections but too much time was spent going thru cornfields away from the river.  The Mosel was nice in that it had trails down both sides and you could pick which you wanted depending on what you wanted to see.  I still have a post in draft on the park in BK coming but still need a few more Pics.  It will be coming soon to a computer near you.

Meersburg to Lindau 10-11-11

When they remodeled the place into a hotel they left the winch for pulling hay into the attic in the middle of the room and at the foot of the bed.  At first glance it looked like a torture rack winch.

The Voralberg in Austria

We stayed in the beautiful hotel Loewen in Meersburg.  We woke up to a blue sky, had a great breakfast and got on the trail.  We passed schloss Hersburg.  Here the hills of the Allgaeu reach the lake shores and the climate is conducive to growing fruit, flowers and wine.  At castle Montforte we could see the snowy slopes of the Voralberg in Austria.  Here we took a long break.  While Mac laid on the beach  in the sun I explored the area around the castle Montforte.  The Castle was built in the Moorish style.  We arrived in Lindau and rode straight to the Island.  The old part of town is situated on the island or insel.  Lindau has the only harbor in Bavaria.  At the harbor's entrance we saw the statute of the marble lion which sits across from the old mangturm or lighthouse from the 13th century.  We checked into the hotel Inselgraben, Mac took a nap and I took a walking tour and looked for a place to eat.  The rathaus is one of the most beautiful in Germany.  At dinner Mac had Zander again and I had  a combination of Zander and felchen.  Both are fish that are caught locally.  The Zander is better.
