Sept 24 2014 Mainz Youth Hostel

On the way to the bike trail we stopped in city center and visited the Dom (Kathedrale) St. Martin.
Over a 1000 years old romanische architecture. Here in Mainz in 1450  Johannes von Guttenberg developed the printing press with movable letters. The University was started in 1476.
We left town and soon were on the bike trail along the river on the left side.We stopped in the little town of Eltville checked out castle the from the 14th century, had some Federweisen (juice from grapes fermenting but not wine yet, we will have a lot of this delicious drink all through the trip,)Mainly, Mac Chantal and I. We stop in Ruedesheim , lots of tourists every were, but I insist on visiting the famous Drosselgasse with its wine and kitsch shops. Some more Federweisen is in order.
We take the ferry across the river to Bingen and our next lodging Youth Hostel Bingen. Up on the hill we see Burg Klopp 13th century and in the river the Maeuseturm. The story goes that the very mean and stingy Bishop was locked up in the tower and was eaten by the mice.

. The tower from the 14th century was used to collect custom from the ships. We arrive at our hostel and to our surprise it is as nice as a hotel.

  1. Ruedesheim was flooded with tourists from the river cruises but it was never the less, a stop not to missed with the many shops and cafes. We were entertained by the clockenspiel at our restaurant where more federweisen was to be had. It played a wonderful tune and the large figurines circled around in the bell tower above our seats.
