Lienz to Villach by Train
Villach to Kranjska Gora, Slovenia by bike

WE took the train to Villach to make up some lost time.  At Villach, we strolled through the downtown, had some morronies (roasted chestnuts) and visited the Hotel Post where Mac and Johanna had stayed the year before.

We followed the Drau River bike trail to the Peace/Freedom Bridge where the trail split and we began to follow the Gailitz River Trail. We stopped in Arnoldstein for lunch and enjoyed panini's and Spritze, cafe americana and hot chocolate.

We soon rode back into Italy and the Alpe Adria Trail and started the hill from hell out of Arnoldstein.  It wasn't so hellish but definetly steep.  We made our way to the junction at Tarvisio and decided to take a detour to Slovenia because Johanna said, "it was only 16 km and mostly flat."  It was mostly uphill but a perfectly paved trail that led us into the mountains through forests and mountain pastures.  The view Mount Triglav loomed ahead.  We reached the beautiful ski town of Granjska Gora home of world cup ski races.  Johanna sought out the apartmaji of Karolina where she had stayed last year.  Karolina was happy to see her and asked right away where Mac was.  We rented two rooms and then made our way into town for dinner which was delightful.  We have not had a bad meal yet.  Johanna had calamari, I had buckwheat grains and mushrooms and Chantal had bratwurst and sauerkraut.

We shopped around the next morning then headed back to the Alpe Adria.

  1. Hello Johanna, Was wondering if you were able to make the trip to Germany. Mac stopped by and got us all caught up. It is so nice of him to come by and talk to Don. Looks like you are having a good time. Will follow your blog.
