Sept 4 2014  Schlitz   I have been properly chastised for whining in the last blog page about air pillows.  Then I get a message from Steve Bonnet about not knowing where we're at.  Well we got behind in our work.   From Schlitz we rode to Bad Hersfeld.   Because of the unknowns about the weather we decided to take the train to Wurzburg and ride on the Main and go to places we haven't been to.  The weather reports on Wurzburg were a lot better then going north of Bad Hersfeld.  Bad Hersfeld didn't look that good when rode along the edge of Old Town.

For the train ride, in which there were 2 changes, Fulda and Hanau.  We got into Wurzburg at about 1600 and it was tshirt weather.  After 3 days of cool, cloudy weather with a little rain thrown in it was quite a change.   Wurzburg always seem to have better weather.  We went to the Burgerspital for dinner.  We sat outside in the courtyard.  The restaurant is a business run  for the benefit of old people who are housed in the building around the courtyard.  They can sit in their rooms and look down on the rich people having dinner, although from the ages of some clientele it looked like a lot of them were having wine and dinner.  After dinner we rode the bikes to Alte MainBrucke.  This old bridge crosses the Main River and has statues of 12 saints on it.  At one end of the bridge are 2 windows that dispense wine.  The wine costs 3.50 euros for a 1/4 liter + 5 euros for bringing the glass back(pfand or refund).  I would venture to say, on a normal day they sell several thousand glasses per window and probably more on the weekends.  We were there on a weekday and there was probably 1000 people jamming the west half of the bridge and all had a glass of wine.  There was a busker band playing good music and farther some guy had brought a piano out there and was playing classical music.  After dark the Festung and Kaeppele are lighted along with the Dom in the other direction.  In the Market they were setting up for a wine fest.

They use anything to fill up the spaces between the timbers of the fachwerk.  Heres about 6 different examples.
