Sept 3 2014  We had a nice breakfast at the Hotel Park,  at which I had crispy bacon and scrambled eggs.  Not the usual fare in Germany.  That food is usually relegated to the hotels that cater to Americans.  But when I get a chance I have more then I should.  We are riding to Schlitz today but first we have to see the things that Fulda is famous for.

We rode to the Rathaus but it has scaffolding all around it and is being renovated.  Google it,  It is the most photographed building in Fulda.  We moved on to the Stadtschloss Fulda.  After a walk thru the inner courtyard we headed to the Gardens and the Orangerie.  Then we walked across the streeet to St Michaels and walked thru it.  We had been there in 1990 and probably have slides of the insides but now no pictures can be taken.  Then to the Dom.  After wondering around in the Dom we mounted up, found the trail and rode on to Schlitz which is on the River Schlitz and they are known for having 5 castles on the hill and a well preserved compact old town with many fachwerk houses around the Marketplatz.  The trail to Schlitz follows the Fulda River and meanders thru woods and meadows.  Unfortunately finding a room wasn't that easy.  Info gaves us some hints but they were either full or wouldn't answer the phone.  Finally we got a room at the Hotel Hahn.  It had a nice pastry shop on the ground floor and J bought some truffles which we scarfed down like Sydney on porkchop.
The hotel Hahn topped my list, so far, of having pillows that are made of air.  They are like American white bread, big and fluffy but when you squeeze the loaf you end up with a little ball.  These pillows didn't even qualify as a white ball.  And they don't have extras in chest somewhere in the room.  I have taken to putting all the towels under the pillow to give it some height.

Stadtschloss gardens and the Orangerie.  These were built between 1721 and 1724
Stadtschloss entry into the inner courtyard.  The prince bishops lived pretty well on the commoners dime.  This would have just one of  probably several castles that they owned.  Most likely there would be at least a summer residence somewhere else

Some of the flowers in the schloss garden.  Alot of the plants here were vegetables.

A cute little fountain in the schloss garden

Looking up the steps at the Orangerie.  Originally built to actually grow citrus inside Orangeries were later made into concert halls or venues for various other events.

St Michaels, the oldest Holy Sepulachre church in Germany and built in the Carolingian style on behalf of Abbot Eigil in 820.

Entry to the Monestery behind the Dom.

Nave of the Dom

Crypt for the remains of St. Boniface, an English Monk who came to Fulda to convert the locals.  He was killed by the frisians in Northern Germany in 754.  He is the patron saint of Germany and was the archbishop of Mainz.

The Fulda River along the bike trail

We came upon this hunting stand along side the trail.  It was nicer and taller then the usual stands.  There must have been some sort of hunting club here because there was about 10 stands situated in the neighboring fields.  A deer didn't have chance
