8-24-13 Letomerice to Melnik

Now that we are finished biking I can finish the Elbe bike trip from Dresden to Prague.  We left Letomerice and rode some dirt trail along the Elbe but the weather was nice and warm so far.

Quiet scene along the trail.  Fisherman and girlfriend on a boat with a country church in the background

Naturally sometime during the day a man needs sustainance to continue on.  This is a little trailside place selling food and beer.

This is a monument showing high water marks during the 200 years.  They don't have the 2013 mark up yet.

When you get to Melnik the schloss Melnik dominates the skyline.  Built in the Renaissance style it was confiscated by the communists in 1918 but has been restored to the original owners the Lobkowicz.   Melnik " old town" is built on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Elbe and Moldau rivers.  It is the center of an extensive wine growing region and the Palace has massive underground cellars to store the wine.  It first was called a town in 1274 and later became a "dowry town" and became the property of the Queens of Bohemia

Villa Karola now the town libary

We had dinner at the restaurant on the left but there seemed to be little else happening.  Restaurants and cafes, we have seen in the Czech Republic have blankets for anyone that needs them.  The wind was blowing and when the sun went down it got cool but still people ate outside.  I think it was mostly so they could smoke.
Melnik Rathaus  After dinner we walked around the town and there was very few people.  This pic is in the town square at sunset.  There must have been a fest in another town.
