After the catacombs we went to Bayreuth's city center for a tour by Baste. Bayreuth(pronounced biroyt) is probably most famous for composer Richard Wagner. His benefactor was Markgraefin Wilhelmina, daughter of the emperor Frederich and the other sponsor was King Ludwig the 2nd of Bavaria. She built the opera house(pic 1), the residence(pic3) and the Alte Schloss(pic4). Ludwig was behind the building of the current opera house called the Festspielhaus(pic5). Wagner designed his own house(pic 2) living in it for 10 years. The house is called "Haus Wahnfried". He is buried behind the house along with his wife and dog. You have make reservation 7 years in advance to get a ticket to the opera.
After the tour we had dinner at a sidewalk cafe. I had schnitzel while J had pig shoulder. It came with potato dumplings. We woke up next morning to pouring rain, but that doesn't stop Johanna. We donned our raingear and took off into the downpour.
By the time we got thru Bayreuth the rain had stopped and we rode along under overcast skies. The trail goes thru beautiful meadows and woods crossing the Main every so often. We crossed the place where the Red Main meets the White Main.
