We left St. Gilgen in warm sunshine this morning on the bike trail along the lake. After 12 km we crossed the Bundesstrasse and now the bike trail followed the river Traun. At noon we stopped at Gasthaus near the trail for some beer and lunch.. Soon we reached Bad Ischl famous for being a favourite spot of emperor Franz Josef and empress Elisabeth (Sissi) I wanted to see the Kaiser Villa and Siss's Marmor Castle, but had not planned to spend that much time there.
We left Ischl and managed to get glimpses of the beautiful Sisi Park. The trail joined the Traun river again and on through Bad Goisern. Once there were many workshops making hand made shoes, now there is only one shop still making them. Soon after we reached Hallstatt See and unexpected steep stretches to climb. Mac was looking for an easier trail below the railroad tracks, but it did not exist any more. The trail soon turned into more of a mountain bike trail and we were the only ones with skinny tires. Found out later today that Margy and Wayne had taken this same trail. After all the uphills there was a very steep downhill and than we reached a bike trail build right above the shore of the lake.WE had beautiful views of the Lake and Hallstatt on the other side.
We rolled into Obertraun and found our Hotel right away,a bit of a strange place with a very weird shower. Soon Margy and Wayne showed up. They arrived here yesterday and were staying at a very interesting place in a tree house. That's all they could find.On weekends it is often hard to find lodging. Their place was called Camp am See and they also had Gypsy Wagons for rent.
After we had a tour of Camp am See we all went out to eat at the Hoellwirt.
Tomorrow we will do some sightseeing at Hallstatt, and will meet M and W sometime on the trail.
